Atomic Bomb 1953 Film Footage


Stock Footage, (black & white) “Operation Doorstep.” March 1953- Las Vegas. Measure the effects of an atomic bomb. A test site including houses, cars, shelters and mannequins depicting people in every day life are set up. Reporters come from all over the U.S.

At 5:20 a.m. the bomb goes off. The first house is blown apart in 2 and 1/3 seconds. If people were inside, they would not have made it. House number two was badly damaged but still standing. People inside this house would have been badly injured or would have died. Best protection found- under ground shelter. Factual Factory- Stock Footage, (color) “Operation Cue” 1955 in Nevada- test the effects of small nuclear weapons. Power lines, radio towers, five types of houses, different kinds of shelters, food- canned and packaged are all set to be tested.

The bomb goes off. 24 hrs. later, spectators are allowed to see the effects. Few houses made it. The shelters offer better protection. Power lines- some damage but can be repaired.

Killing 64. Last month another plane crashed into Tokyo bay killing 133. At Mt. Fugi- British airliner catches fire and crashes killing 124. Total amount killed in past two months= 321. “Drama In Space” Gemini VIII Forced Down After Linkup- Neil Armstrong- sent up into space with a mission that started off well and then went horribly wrong. Armstrong was forced to emergency land. “Rendezvous With Tomorrow” Historic Gemini 8 Pictures- Highest praise went to Armstrong and his co-pilot Scott. Footage from Gemini 8 is shown
